A lecture by Tom Klobe, Emeritus Professor and former director of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery, on the development and design of an important exhibition at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului, Maui. This exhibition featured unique and well-loved objects from local families on the island of Maui (e.g., a live taro plant, a favorite horse saddle, a laundry stone retrieved from an abandoned village, an international collection of salt and pepper shakers, and a historic automobile).

In 2005, Mr. Klobe, was recognized as one of six "Living Treasures" in Hawaii by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission. At the time he was the Director of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Gallery and the recipient of the Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Community Service and the Chevalier de l'Order des Arts et des Lettres, Republic of France. At the end of May 2006, Mr. Klobe retired from his long career as a respected teacher and gallery director. Although his classes in art history (Medieval and Islamic arts), graphic design, and museum interpretation were always popular, he will be best remembered and loved for his inspirational teaching in "Exhibition Design and Gallery Management" courses.

Under Mr. Klobe's direction, the UH Art Gallery established a local, national, and international reputation for impeccably designed exhibitions that consistently dazzled visitors and enhanced their experiences of the works on display. His gallery won five national "Print Casebooks" awards for excellence in exhibition design, often times winning out over exhibitions from more distinguished institutions (e.g., Metropolitan Museum and the National Gallery of Art) with larger budgets. Many of Mr. Klobe's students now work in museums all over the world and credit their passion for exhibitions, interest in innovative exhibition design, and strong work ethic to the examples he set at the UH Art Gallery. In the summer of 2005, a two-day workshop conducted by Mr. Klobe on "Exhibition Design for Museums, Galleries, and Related Sites" filled to capacity with enthusiastic participants (museum professionals, students, and interested individuals).

The UH Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program sponsored the above workshop through the UH Outreach College, and will continue to offer workshops by Mr. Klobe as long as he has the time and interest. The Director of the Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program, Dr. Karen K. Kosasa, coordinated the logistics of the two-day workshop.

This is the first in a series of five lectures. A second lecture has already been taped and a third is currently being taped. Dr. Kosasa will be submitting grant proposals to fund the remainder of the lectures.
