Altogether:
Contemporary Papua New Guinea Art
Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia in 1975. This
historic event also marked the explosion of the contemporary art movement,
through which artists explored the visual interpretation of nationalism.
Artists began to conceptualize a new national identity through their art,
illustrating what it meant to be a Papua New Guinean as opposed to a clan
member. At this time in PNG history there was a concerted movement towards
nationhood and anticolonialism expressed in all forms of the arts. In
this supportive political and intellectual climate, indigenous writers,
sympathetic expatriate academics and leading Papua New Guineans encouraged
the development of contemporary visual arts.
This exhibit is organized into three chronological sections: The Early
Masters,The Centre for Creative Arts/National Art School Artists, and
New Art Forms/New Artists. In addition, customary utilitarian and ceremonial
art provides cultural context and illustrates the intangible spiritual
link of the contemporary to the past.

Ryukyu/Okinawa: Culture & Trade
In celebration of the July 1st Opening of the UHM Center for Okinawan
Studies, the Asia Collection Department has kicked off the new display
of "Ryukyu/Okinawa: Culture & Trade." Much like Hawaii,
Okinawa was a kingdom (Ryukyu Kingdom) until 1879. Situated among China,
Taiwan, South Korea, and the mainland Japan, the Ryukyu Kingdom flourished
because of trade. The display focuses on the flow of culture, ideas, and
people in and out of the Ryukyu Kingdom to Asia, Pacific & the Americas,
and Japan.

Ancient Customs, Ancient Stories: Lampung Ceremonial Textiles and Objects

On permanent exhibit is the museum's starter collection,
which represents the University of Hawai'i's special interests in Asia
and the Pacific region and is largely contributed by the late John Young,
whose vision for a University museum was the inspiration for the project.

The Waikiki Aquarium, founded in 1904, is the third
oldest public aquarium in the United States. A part of the University
of Hawaii since 1919, the Aquarium is located next to a living reef on
the Waikiki shoreline.
